The Wuppertal Institute is a scientific research facility of the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia that is run in the legal form of a limited liability company (Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung, gGmbH). The company is listed in the Wuppertal Register of Companies (HRB 7619). By the terms of its Articles of Association the Institute solely and directly serves public-benefit purposes as defined in § 51 et seq. of the German Fiscal Code (Abgabenordnung). Its sole shareholder is the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
